biography

Since studying with Wim Hoogewerf, Roland Dyens and Pablo Marquez (for whom he was assistant teacher at the Strasbourg Conservatory), Philippe Mouratoglou has distinguished himself by his instrumental openness – he plays a wide variety of acoustic guitars: classical, 6 and 12 steel string, baritone – and stylistic diversity.

Both performer and improviser, he collaborates with musicians and ensembles from across the spectrum, both in the classic sphere as well as the world of improvised music.

Since 2009, the duo he formed with soprano Ariane Wohlhuter has released 2 CDs on the Troba Vox label: We only came to dream, devoted to John Dowland, Benjamin Britten and Dusan Bogdanovic (2013), and Mélodies et Lieder, consisting of his arrangements for voice and guitar works by Franz Schubert and Gabriel Fauré (2017).

In parallel to this, Philippe Mouratoglou founded the Vision Fugitive label in 2012 with clarinetist Jean-Marc Foltz and graphic designer Philippe Ghielmetti, on which he has released several original projects:

- a re-reading of the repertoire of foundational bluesman Robert Johnson in a trio with Jean-Marc Foltz and double-bassist Bruno Chevillon (Steady rollin’ man - Echoes of Robert Johnson, 2012)
- two solo recitals that bring together the works of Francesco da Milano, Egberto Gismonti, Toru Takemitsu, Arthur Kampela, Leo Brouwer, Benjamin Britten and his own compositions and improvisations (Exercices d’évasion, 2013; D’autres vallées, 2016)
- a duo with flamenco guitarist Pedro Soler that explores the influence of Spanish popular music on the works of Isaac Albéniz (Rumores de la Caleta - Albéniz & le flamenco, 2014)
- a CD devoted to Fernando Sor (2019)
- a guitar/double bass/drum trio with Bruno Chevillon and Ramón López that has released two discs (Univers-solitude, 2018 - "Discovery of the year" Jazz magazine - and Ricercare, 2021)

In concert, he has been recently invited to play on the following stages: Berliner Philharmonie, the Chaise-Dieu Festival, Carnegie Hall (New York), Temps musicaux (Ramatuelle, France), Flâneries musicales (Reims, France) Pacific Spring Music Festival (Polynesia), Isaac Albéniz Festival (Camprodon, Spain), Nits de canço i de musica (Eus, France) the Colmar Spring Festival, the Jazzèbre Festival, Festival des Monts de la Madeleine, Circulo de Bellas Artes (Madrid), Festival D’Jazz (Nevers, France), Jazzdor Paris & Berlin, Théâtre de l’Athénée (Paris), Fontfroide Abbey, Fontevraud Abbey, as well as Russia, Greece, Brazil, Thailand, etc.

He is also at the origin, with the Patrimoine du Languedoc-Roussillon foundation, of the itinerant Musique et Patrimoine festival that has been active since 2010.

"An intimate song with exceptional sensitivity… Philippe Mouratoglou opens the door to ever more secret imaginary worlds... a strange visceral poetry that never ceases to captivate us." (classiquenews.com, 2016)
